Special Report: Climate Change in the Himalayas

Last week, I happened to be watching a remarkable gathering of government officials near Everest base camp. Instead of flying to Copenhagen to attend the climate summit as a youth activist and spokesperson, I had flown into Kathmandu for a few days and was pleased to note that I was present in the city as government officials were sending a powerful message to the rest of the world. Led by the Prime Minister, the cabinet was meeting at Kalapatthar Plateau (5242 mt), to discuss the impacts of climate change on the small mountain country and to adopt a 10-point Everest Declaration.

Meeting Ministers and Governors

While I was reluctant that COP15 will be closed with a substantial agreement even before my arrival in Copenhagen, I at least hoped to meet a few established people in the world of politics. With a keen eye and acute hearing, I managed to meet ministers, governors, members of press and a small handful of Heads of States, including Danish Prime Ministers Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Swedish Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
